Hi, I'm Rob. I'm The Winemaker's Apprentice. I work at Grimes Mill Winery in Lexington, KY, under The Winemaker (and owner), Dr. Philip "The Wizard" DeSimone. I have Master's degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan and UCLA, respectively. However, 3 years into my PhD program at UCLA, I couldn't stand engineering any more. So, I followed another passion.
I'm not technically trained in wine. I've read much about it, and I've been subscribed to wine educator podcasts for years. I've tasted at wineries throughout California while living between Los Angeles and Oakland. I've also tasted throughout Michigan and Kentucky. On my own, I've tasted wines from just about every wine-producing region in the world. Yet, I'm still not very educated about wine.
So, I jumped at the opportunity to work with Philip. He needed help, and I wanted an education unlike the years I spent in classrooms at college. Here I am, learning wine from the soil to the grapes to the processes to the bottle. I created this blog to help share everything I'm learning and experiencing. Most of it will be my opinions and impressions, so it should not be used as any sort of formal reference.
If you get a chance, you should swing by the winery. Come try the wine we're making, and we'd be happy to show you around. There's nothing like experiencing these things in person.
So, until we taste together at the winery, In Vino Veritas,
The Winemaker's Apprentice
